A hatpin is a decorative pin for holding a hat to the head, usually by the hair. In Western Culture, the hatpin is almost solely a female item. They are typically around 20cm in length, with the pinhead being the most decorated part.
Back in the olden days, the hatpin was invented to hold wimples and veils in place, and was hand-made. In Britain, they rose to popularity towards the end of the Victorian Era, and continue to be a popular accessory. Laws were passed in 1908 in America which limited the length of hatpins, as there was a concern they might be used by suffragettes as weapons!
Hatpins are also collectible items, and there is an American Hatpin Society for collectors. There is The Hat Pin Society of Great Britain = www.hatpinsociety.org.uk
Hat Pins are the perfect accessory for just about every hat! It serves a purpose, as it will secure your hat to your head (via your hair) when the May breeze kicks in, but it also brings your hat to life and gives someone standing behind you something else to smile at!
I custom make each one for each hat, but you don't have to buy it unless you want to! Or, you can choose another one you like.
Last year's Oaks Day was also Pink-Out day for the Susan B Komen foundation and I made some special hat pins for the day, they were a big hit, especially for the Breast Cancer Survivors.
